St. Clement Parishioners quiz Connétable candidates at first online hustings

History was made last Thursday evening as St. Clement Parishioners tuned into Jersey’s first live online hustings to quiz the two Connétable candidates ahead of Wednesday’s by-election. The event was live streamed on Facebook, YouTube and Zoom, attracting over 250 live views; in addition to over 650 people who have since watched a recording of the live broadcast.

The candidates were asked for their views on a range of topics affecting Parishioners, including:

  • Green initiatives
  • Expanding primary school capacity
  • Housing for young people
  • Promoting tourism
  • Live events in the Parish
  • The new hospital; and
  • Connecting with the Parish community

During a question time dedicated to under-21s, the candidates responded to questions from young Parishioners, including one from a pair of 16-year old residents seeking to understand the candidates’ views on future investment in the youth of the Island. Whilst most questions were read out by the Meeting Chairman: Susan Pearmain, Senior Procureur du Bien Public, a number of brave Parishioners took up the opportunity to ask their questions on-screen via Zoom.

A recording of the hustings is available to watch on Vote.je but for any Parishioners without online access, a screen has been set up at St. Clement’s Parish Hall today and tomorrow. To book to watch the video recording of the hustings event, Parishioners should call the Parish Hall on 01534 854724.
